Sierra Leone’s cultural calendar gained a powerful new rhythm last Thursday (30th July 2026) as the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, officially launched the One Nation Reggae Festival, a landmark event designed to fuse Sierra Leonean and Caribbean traditions while boosting the country’s tourism sector.
The launch ceremony, hosted at BBQ Box at Levuma Beach and simulcast across Bo, Makeni and Freetown, was attended by government officials, artists and industry stakeholders, which underscored the festival’s mission to celebrate Sierra Leone’s historical role in global emancipation and to showcase local creative talent. Minister Tunis described the festival as “a symbol of Sierra Leone’s openness, resilience, and creativity,” noting that it will serve as both a cultural bridge and an economic driver.
The launch ceremony included the unveiling of the guest artists from Jamaica, including Busy Signal, one of the most versatile and influential dancehall and reggae artists of the 21st century, known for hits like “Step Out,” “Come Over (Missing You),” and “Watch Out for This (Bumaye).”
According to Minister Tunis, the Cultural Fusion, a six-day event of live performances, workshops, and community engagement blending Sierra Leonean and Caribbean artistry, will be a key highlight of the Festival.
Minister Tunis called on Sierra Leoneans abroad to embrace the festival as a platform for investment and cultural pride, stressing that tourism is a gateway to rebuilding and rebranding the nation. She emphasised that diaspora participation is vital to sustaining the creative industry and strengthening Sierra Leone’s global image
With the official launch complete, preparations are underway for the festival’s regional showcases in Freetown, Kenema, Bo, Makeni, and other towns. Organisers believe the event will not only energise communities but also cement Sierra Leone’s reputation as Africa’s emerging reggae capital.
