The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs alongside the Sierra Leone National Museum embarked on a significant initiative to celebrate the life and contributions of John Henry Smythe, a notable aviator, barrister, and World War ll veteran. The event attracted sector professionals, historians, school pupils, students and descendants of John Henry Smythe.

John Henry Smythe was not only an aviator but also a distinguished barrister who made substantial contributions to Sierra Leone’s legal framework and social development. His service in World War II underscored his commitment to justice and freedom, enriching his legacy in both military and civilian spheres. Born in the early 19th century, Smythe was instrumental in various post-war initiatives aimed at rebuilding Sierra Leone.
Son of John Henry Smythe, Eddy Smythe gave a presentation of his legendary father followed by a video documentary that showcased the vibrant history of his father and his contributions as an aviator, barrister and military Personnel. His service during the World War ll highlighted the sacrifices made by Sierra Leoneans in global conflicts.
Chairman of the occasion, Assistant Director of Culture, Ishmeal Kamara highlighted the importance of the event and the life of a hero “John Henry Smythe”.
Mrs. Olivette Linda Barnette, Curator of Sierra Leone National Museum explained the significance of the event and expressed excitement on hosting such an historic event. ” This is to educate the public about John Henry Smythe who displayed the spirit of national pride and I believe after this historic event, many would learn from his true life story”, she said.
The event aimed to educate the public about the life, achievements, and the historical significance of John Henry Smythe, foster a sense of national pride in Sierra Leone’s history and cultural contributions as well as emphasizing the importance of preserving historical narratives and cultural identities through commemorative events.
