The Monument and Relics Commission has organized a conducted tour of Freetown’s Historic, cultural and touristic sites for pupils from 10 secondary schools. The tour is part of the activities for June’s Monument and Relics month in the ongoing Tourism for All Campaign.
The aim of the tour was to help develop pupils interest in history as well as their knowledge. It also enable pupils to develop a deeper understanding of the people and places that have shaped society today and also served as a catalyst for sparking pupils imagination and showing them a world beyond the classroom.
The tour started from National Museum where the Education and Outreach Officer, Olivette Bernette orientated the pupils on the Museum being the National identity of Sierra Leone, it ethnicity and intangible aspect. At the Railway Museum the Senior Tour Guide, Mohamed Jabbie explained to the pupils the history and relevance of the railway showing them the remains of the relics.
Madam Olivette Bernette also took the pupils on a guided tour of Old Fourah Bay College (FBC) edifice, Old Wharf Step, Thomas Peters Statue, Saint George Cathedral Church, Big Market, Maroon Church and the Cotton Tree.
The pupils expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs for giving them the opportunity to explore historic sites and also broaden their horizons with regards significant monuments and Relics of Sierra Leone.
