The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs together with the National Tourist Board, has on Saturday, 12th August 2023 embarked on the removal of dirt and seaweed on the surface of Lumley beach. The move, orchestrated by the Minister and her Deputy was aimed at ensuring that the beach, a prime touristic attraction is habitable through regular cleaning. The Chief Minister, Dr. David Sengeh and other government Ministries were all part of the cleaning exercise.
The move to clean the beach followed the on-the-spot visit by Minister Tunis and her Deputy to all beach bars and similar establishments along Lumley beach to ascertain health risk and proffer tangible solutions for the proper management of the beach. The cleaning attracted university students and youth groups who joined the cleaning as part of the commemoration of the International Youth Day.
The raining season always pose serious challenge in up keeping the beach because of the relentless flow of seaweed, waste and dirt on the beach. The Minister in her quest to adjust this anomaly conjured the support of other MDAs and brought together every staff of the Ministry and the Board to participate in the cleaning exercise as the first of many strives to ensure that the beach is kept clean.
Addressing university students and youth groups, the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Kadijatu Kamara applauded them for participating in the cleaning saying that their efforts was appreciated and called on them to be ambassadors of tourism.
Minister Nabeela Tunis remarked that the cleaning of the beach should not be a one of process but a continuous endeavour to always keep the beach clean. She called on beach bar owners to take responsibility in cleaning and maintaining the sanitation of the beach. She thanked her colleague Ministers, staff of MTCA, NTB, youth groups and university students for a job well done, saying that they would not relent in ensuring that the beach is clean.
