The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs (MTCA) with support from United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on Saturday 5th September,2020 provide training for women on ” Climate Change Resilience Training for Women Entrepreneurs in Tourism Coastal Risk Areas” in Sulima Village.

 

In his opening statement the Chairman of the program Mr. Sundu Marrah who is also the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry, brings warm greetings from the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs to the people of Sulima, he said one of the policies of government is to empower women which is in line with the National Medium Tearm Development Plan.This is why international partners like UNDP has  supported the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs to provide training empowerment for women in coastal risk areas. He encouraged them to make good use of the training as the skills gained will help them enhance sustainable livelihood. Paramount Chief Mustapha J. Massaquoi lll, in his welcoming address said ‘today is a joyful day for the people of Sulima’. He furthered that this is not the first program the MTCA has organized for his community people, citing the just concluded Social Safet Net Support, the Paramount Chief conference on Tourism governance etc. “It is that  conference that gives me the opportunity to meet and know my colleague Paramount Chiefs from the the Northern part of the country”, and that  opportunities like this by the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs is not new as the Ministry has been doing this by bringing people together, promoting peace, unity and national cohesion. He concluded by saying that “I now understand the reason why government is using tourism as a vehicle to diversify the economy of this country.”

 

The L.U.C Mr. John Sesay thanked the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, especially the Hon. Deputy Minister for providing leadership and that they have learnt from news that the Ministry is doing extremely well in promoting the agenda of this government. He also said that as protectors of lives and properties they have a lot to do with regards providing security for people coming as tourists in the country.

 

Mrs. Musu B. Massaquoi the community women’s leader thanked His Excellency the President Rtd.Brig. Dr. Julius Maada Bio for appointing a woman that has passion for her women as Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs that is why the women of Sulima were considered for such opportunities. She also said that they depend on fishing for their livelihood and such training will not only help provide  an alternative source of income for them but are now in position to also help others to develop such entrepreneurship skills.

 

The Director of Tourism Mr. Mohamed Jalloh said the purpose of the training is that, 70% of people working in the tourism industry are women and that is why this training will help to stimulate their mind set on sustainable tourism entrepreneurship in coastal risk communities of which Sulima is not an exception.

 

In his keynote address the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs Hon. William I.K. Robinson said he believes in the women of Sulima for their industriousness and that is why we are to give them this training today. He further  said that because His Excellency the President Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio believes in women that is why the dynamic Hon. Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs Dr. Memunatu B.Pratt was appointed to change the narratives of the Tourism industry in this country and that women should not be limited to the kitchen anymore and we should help our women to be self reliant. He cited the just concluded Safety Net Support program for tourism hospitality workers, soft loan schemes and palns are on  the way to support the entertainment sector and many more, that’s why the President said Paopa we mus betteh he concluded.
