– Sierra Leone today joins the international community in commemorating World Tourism Day 2026, a global observance that highlights tourism’s vital role in driving economic growth, cultural exchange, sustainable development, and community empowerment.
This year’s celebration is held under the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” which underscores the transformative role of technology and innovation in shaping the future of the global tourism industry.
In his message marking the day, António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, stated:
“World Tourism Day celebrates the many ways tourism connects cultures and enriches lives. This year, it also asks what kind of future we want for tourism.”
He further emphasised that technology must serve humanity and that tourism workers, local communities, and emerging destinations should play a central role in shaping the future of the sector.
In Sierra Leone, the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, is expected to deliver the Government’s National Statement to commemorate World Tourism Day. The Minister will also join tourism and cultural stakeholders, staff of the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, the National Tourist Board, Monument and Relics Commission, and representatives of other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in a health walk aimed at promoting wellness, unity, and awareness of the importance of tourism to national development.
The celebration provides an opportunity for stakeholders to reflect on the progress made in advancing Sierra Leone’s tourism industry while exploring innovative strategies to strengthen the sector’s contribution to job creation, community development, environmental conservation, and economic diversification.
As the country commemorates World Tourism Day 2026, stakeholders are expected to reaffirm their commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and technology-driven tourism sector capable of unlocking Sierra Leone’s vast tourism potential for the benefit of present and future generations.
