Sierra Leone Delegation Reaffirms Ancestral Bonds with Maroon Community in Jamaica

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs Nabeela Farida Tunis, together with her delegation, including Ambassador to the United States of America and High Commissioner Designate to Jamaica, Amara Sowa; Senior Assistant Secretary at the Ministry, Fatmata Samura; and Research and Development Lead of the Monuments and Relics Commission, Francis Musa Momoh paid a courtesy call on the Chief and Flagstaff Maroon Community in Jamaica. The visit highlighted the deep historical and cultural connections between Sierra Leone and the Maroon descendants, whose ancestry is strongly linked to Sierra Leone.

During the engagement, the delegation extended heartfelt condolences to families affected by Hurricane Melissa and commended their resilience during recovery efforts. A walk through the historic “Kojo Town” retraced powerful memories of resistance and freedom, reaffirming the Minister’s commitment to cultural preservation, education, and the strengthening of people-to-people ties between Sierra Leone and Jamaica.
