Over 1,000 military personnel and police officers joined forces in a massive cleaning exercise at Lumley/Aberdeen Beach, supporting the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs’ drive to keep the beach clean and hygienic. Hon. Minister of Tourism, Nabeela Farida Tunis, described the effort as proof of what government institutions can achieve when united for a higher purpose.
Despite the Ministry’s consistent efforts, improper waste disposal by citizens continues to pollute the beach. Minister Tunis thanked the RSLAF and SLP for their intervention, noting that their involvement demonstrates strong collaboration and sends a message of responsibility to the public. She urged citizens to manage their waste properly and expressed optimism that the Freetown City Council will step up its role in beach cleaning.The General Manager of the National Tourist Board, Fatmata Mida-Carew, clarified that the institution has never collected dues for waste management from beach bar operators. The exercise was closely monitored by top leaders, including Minister Tunis, CDS Lt. Gen. Amara Idara Bangura, IGP Fayia Sellu, NSCoord Abdulai Caulker, and senior staff of MTCA, RSLAF, and SLP, underscoring their commitment to a cleaner environment and a stronger tourism sector.
The day ended with a strategic meeting among the three institutions to develop sustainable solutions for maintaining a clean and safe beach. A significant amount of waste was cleared, and the process will continue to ensure a healthier and more attractive coastal environment.
