As part of the World Tourism Day Celebrations and the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs continued efforts to promote eco-consciousness among Sierra Leoneans, a vibrant Quiz and Debate Competition was held at the MTCA Pavilion. The event brought together secondary school and university students to showcase their knowledge and perspectives on tourism, sustainability, and cultural heritage under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.”
In the Quiz Competition, four secondary schools, Annie Walsh Memorial School, Methodist Boys High School, Ahmadiyya Secondary School, and St. Edwards Secondary School competed keenly for the top spot. Annie Walsh Memorial School emerged victorious, with St. Edwards securing second place and Methodist Boys High School coming third. Munjay-Salamatu Lansana of Annie Walsh Memorial School stood out as the Best Quizzer, earning well-deserved recognition for her exceptional performance.

The university-level Debate Competition was equally engaging, held under the motion “This house believes that ecotourism cannot simultaneously achieve sustainable economic growth, inclusivity, and environmental conservation.” Fourah Bay College claimed first place, followed by Milton Margai Technical University in second, and IPAM in third. Karim Juanah of Milton Margai Technical University was adjudged Best Debater for his eloquence and analytical skill in defending his argument.
The event underscored the Ministry’s commitment to nurturing young minds as ambassadors for sustainable and inclusive tourism.

In her closing remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Judith C. Jones, who also conducted the certification ceremony, commended the students for their brilliance and passion. She emphasized that engaging the youth in platforms like these is vital for shaping the future of Sierra Leone’s tourism sector and advancing national awareness on ecotourism, culture, and heritage.
