The Rotary Club of Freetown–Sunset, in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs and the National Tourist Board (NTB), has successfully constructed and handed over newly built public toilet facilities along the Aberdeen/Lumley Beach corridor. This important initiative addresses a long-standing need for accessible sanitation services for both residents and beach visitors, while contributing significantly to improving the overall tourism experience along one of Sierra Leone’s most vibrant coastal destinations.
Delivering a statement on behalf of the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Alie Badara Koroma expressed profound gratitude to the Rotary Club for the remarkable contribution in constructing the four new public toilets. The Ministry emphasized that clean, safe, and accessible amenities are essential for enhancing visitors’ comfort and promoting Sierra Leone’s beaches as attractive, well-managed tourism assets. The facility is expected to ease the challenges previously faced by beachgoers due to limited public conveniences.

The Ministry and the National Tourist Board reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with the Rotary Club to ensure the long-term sustainability of the facility. They assured the public that mechanisms will be put in place to guarantee proper maintenance, operational efficiency, and continuous functionality. This collaboration forms part of a broader effort to create a cleaner, more welcoming environment along the Lumley-Aberdeen Beach corridor and aligns with the government’s plans to improve tourism infrastructure nationwide.
Speaking during the ceremony, past Rotaract President Milllicent expressed appreciation to the Ministry, NTB, and stakeholders for allocating the space that made the project possible. She explained that the initiative stemmed from the organization’s observations of the difficulties beach users face when facilities are inadequate. What began as a modest idea in April has now grown into a fully developed structure. She reaffirmed the Rotary Club’s commitment to continued collaboration with NTB and MTCA to further enhance the facility and respond effectively to the needs of the people who will use it.
