Mount Gabon Forest Hike Showcases Sierra Leone’s Natural Heritage and Conservation Efforts

Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs led a forest hike to Mount Gabon bringing together participants, including international tourists and representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.

The three-hour expedition offered participants an immersive experience into Sierra Leone’s rich biodiversity and ongoing conservation efforts.

Led by experienced rangers Abdul Conteh and Alex Fayia Kendor, the hike featured educational discussions about Sierra Leone’s wildlife sanctuaries, including Outamba Kilimi National Park’s elephants and hippopotamuses. Participants encountered diverse flora and fauna, including Daniella trees, snakes, butterflies all while gaining insight into efforts being made to protect the environment.

2025 is the Year of Ecotourism and the hike is also part of the many activities of the Ministry intended to ward off encroachers from the Tourism Development Areas.
