The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, together with relevant MDAs (Ministry of Lands, Ministry of Environment, National Protected Area Authority, Environmental Protection Agency) with support from government security forces have kick-started demolition exercise of unauthorized structures at the buffer zones around Tacugama Sanctuary and Tecuyama catchment. It exercise was aimed at reclaiming the Tourism Development Area (TDA) handed-over to the Ministry of Tourism by the Ministry of Lands.
These demolition exercise follows series of engagements with community stakeholders admonishing them on the negative effects of encroachment around the buffer zones. Press statement was issued by the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs frowning at illegal activities around Tacugama surroundings.
Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs is determined to protect tourist destination and also safeguard the World Bank funded facilities at Tacugama together with the catchment that falls under the TDA.
